Smooth Out Wrinkles with Neuromodulators in Charleston

Like the popular BOTOX®, a versatile neuromodulator, DYSPORT® at the Charleston area’s Germain Dermatology are used to smooth out dynamic wrinkles on the forehead. The main ingredient in these cosmetic treatments blocks chemical signals that trigger muscle movement, preventing the targeted skin from being pulled into a new position and revealing tell-tale lines. The effects are temporary, allowing movement to return after several months.

Our dermatologists work directly with each patient to determine which treatment would work best to deliver the desired aesthetic results, whether that is DYSPORT® or BOTOX®, a dermal filler, or laser skin resurfacing. They also administer injections with precision to ensure that patients can continue to show a full range of emotions.

DYSPORT FAQ'S

DYSPORT® is an injectable that works similar to BOTOX®. This neurotoxin contains botulinum toxin Type A and entered the market in 2009. DYSPORT® diffuses at a different rate than other neuromodulators, allowing it to travel a bit more from its injection site. The higher diffusion rate makes it an ideal option for smoothing moderate to severe glabellar lines (wrinkles on the forehead) and between the eyebrows, as it can effectively work on a larger area. The results appear sooner than they do with other injectables, but last for a similar amount of time.

XEOMIN & DYSPORT FAQ'S

DYSPORT® is an injectable that works similar to BOTOX®. This neurotoxin contains botulinum toxin Type A and entered the market in 2009. DYSPORT® diffuses at a different rate than other neuromodulators, allowing it to travel a bit more from its injection site. The higher diffusion rate makes it an ideal option for smoothing moderate to severe glabellar lines (wrinkles on the forehead) and between the eyebrows, as it can effectively work on a larger area. The results appear sooner than they do with other injectables, but last for a similar amount of time.

XEOMIN® is one of the newer facial injectables and is also called the “naked BOTOX®” due to the absence of the additives used in other neuromodulators. A patient can develop antibodies to such additives on rare occasions (roughly one in 10,000), meaning the injections no longer work to relax muscles. That makes XEOMIN® an ideal option for Charleston-area patients who have become resistant to BOTOX®, are concerned about additives or want long-lasting results.

Belonging to a class of injectables known as neuromodulators, XEOMIN® and DYSPORT® use botulinum toxin to target specific muscles in the face. Once an area is injected, the active ingredient in the cosmetic temporarily relaxes and limits the movement of muscles around the injection site. The skin then becomes smoother as the look of muscle-related wrinkles diminishes. The decreasing muscle movement is also meant to prevent the formation of new lines.

DYSPORT® and XEOMIN® both originate from the same bacterium: Clostridium botulinum. Additionally, both injectables are synthesized as botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin to be injected into the skin. Both treatment methods have been proven safe and effective in multiple clinical trials and are used worldwide as alternatives to BOTOX®. The results for both injectables are almost identical as they both relax the targeted areas of the face to decrease and smooth out wrinkles.

When choosing between DYSPORT® or XEOMIN®, patients can receive guidance from a dermatologist at the Charleston area’s Germain Dermatology, but should also know the difference between both injectables. As noted above, XEOMIN® lacks additive surface proteins, which reduces the risk of allergic reactions. DYSPORT® is considered a heavier injectable because of the added proteins, which act as a protective barrier and are grouped around the botulinum toxin, allowing the results to last longer.

A noted benefit of DYSPORT® is that it’s injected at a different strength, allowing it to affect a larger area when compared to other neuromodulators. Patients in the Charleston area looking for faster results may want to select DYSPORT®, as it takes only about two to three days for the effects to begin to be visible. XEOMIN® takes approximately five to six days to generate noticeable results. DYSPORT® may be the better option for patients who need a more extensive area treated due to its ability to cover a greater area on the face.

DYSPORT® and XEOMIN® are safe injectables for Charleston patients of any skin color and skin type. However, patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of neurological diseases shouldn’t use these injectable neurotoxins unless a qualified dermatologist approves the treatment.

Anyone looking for optimal results can schedule touch-ups with the Germain Dermatology team every four to six months, depending on how their skin responds to the injections. The intervals between each treatment may increase over time since the muscles can become used to being relaxed over a series of sessions.
